Lisa Darger, the director of sustainability for Sentara Health, joined the organization in 2024 to oversee its environmental priorities. She established the Sentara Sustainability Committee to identify priorities and establish achievable goals. The initiative included paper recycling, plastic waste for CT contrast scans, and compliance with the Hampton Roads Sanitation District. Four Sentara hospitals in Hampton Roads received gold awards for their compliance with their wastewater discharge permits. Darger also highlighted the teamwork displayed in reducing desflurane gas and identifying opportunities to be more efficient in purchases and equipment.
