CarMax has agreed to pay $1.1 million and change its practices to settle a lawsuit by multiple California county prosecutors alleging that the national auto dealer was slow-footing title transfers to customers in violation of state law. The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office led the litigation, which also included district attorneys in San Francisco, Sonoma, Los Angeles, Riverside and Ventura. The settlement includes $50,000 for a state consumer protection fund, $150,000 to cover prosecutors' investigative costs and $900,000 in civil fines. As part of the settlement, CarMax will be required to ensure titles are transferred to buyers within the state's 30-day deadline.
