Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has accused the NFL of using the Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview candidates based on race, as "discriminatory" and "discrimination". He has demanded that the league suspend the rule, stating that it violates Florida law by requiring race-based considerations in hiring. Uthme gave NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell a May 1 deadline to confirm that the rule would no longer be enforced on teams in Florida. The Rooney Rule was first implemented by the NFL in 2003 to address low numbers of minorities in head coaching positions and requires at least two minority candidates for various positions.
