Hawaii Gov. Josh Green has submitted a formal request for a presidential disaster declaration following severe storms across the state. The declaration, if approved, would unlock critical federal support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). It would include public assistance for debris removal, emergency protective measures, and permanent repairs to roads, bridges, utilities and public facilities. If approved, the state estimates damage may exceed $1 billion. Sens. Brian Schatz, Mazie Hirono, and Reps. Ed Case and Jill Tokuda have supported Green's request and urged federal action to help communities recover from two consecutive Kona low storm systems.
