Neighbors and ice rink enthusiasts are appealing the city's approval of the Lloyd Center's redevelopment plan. The owners,KKR Real Estate Finance Trust and Urban Renaissance Group, plan to raze the mall and eventually rebuild with a mix of housing, shopping, and entertainment venues. The Portland Design Commission unanimously approved the redevelopment plan last month. However, the development plan still requires a separate demolition permit. Neighbors and mall patrons argue that the mall should remain open and preserve the ice rink as an amenity and attractant for the new residential community. The appeals will be heard by the Portland City Council in June.
