Voters narrowly approved a ballot referendum on congressional redistricting, giving Democrats an advantage in the upcoming midterms. The vote was called at 50.3% in support of the referendum and 49.7% against it. Under the maps approved, 10 congressional districts would favor Democrats and one would favor Republicans. The temporary measure will be in effect for the midterms before returning to Virginia's standard redistricting process following the 2030 census. Democrats argued the new maps were a way to "fight back" against a Republican stronghold in a national GOP stronghold. Republicans have called the redistricting attempt a "power grab" by Richmond politicians that dilutes representations of minorities and rural communities. The new maps will significantly change congressional makeups across Hampton Roads and surrounding areas, potentially leading to some candidates choosing different congressional districts.
