New Mexico's state judge, Bryan Biedscheid, has warned that some proposed changes to Instagram and Facebook could amount to "overreach". The state's attorney general, Raúl Torrez, is pushing for extensive changes and up to $3.7 billion in penalties after a state jury found that Mark Zuckerberg's company, Meta, had failed to protect children from sexual predators. The state is seeking to implement an effective age verification process for accounts, recommendation algorithms that prioritise user safety over boosting how much time they spend on the apps, and limits on end-to-end encrypted messaging for minors. Meta has threatened to cut off access to Instagram or Faceook if the judge orders such features.
