Former BYU player Lee Cummard, a first-year head coach, is preparing his women's team for the quarterfinals of the WBIT, where they are set to face Stanford. Despite a disappointing season, Cummard remains committed to coaching and leading his young squad, despite being the first team left out of the NCAA Tournament. He had to make a decision when Jeff Judkins left BYU after a 26-4 season and a loss in the NCAA tournament. Cummard was offered as a replacement for Judkins, but was turned down by the school and replaced him with Amber Whiting. After Whiting's transfer, Cummards took over and began working like a mechanic to fix the team's engine. He has since empowered Delaney Gibb and Amari Whiting, signed several new players, including Utah's top prep scorer Olivia Hamlin and New Mexico's two-time Gatorade Player of the Year Sydney Benally, and added size and freshman Lara Rohkol and Bolanle Yussef. Despite setbacks, the team continues to improve.
