Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City met with FIFA President Gianni Infantino to discuss World Cup preparations in New York. The talks were part of City Hall's ongoing planning for the 2026 tournament, which officials say will bring significant economic benefits to the city and region. The meeting also discussed the potential for New York to become a top destination for soccer fans and talent. This comes amid concerns over the preparation for the tournament, with FIFA Czar Maya Handa stating that the tournament is expected to bring over one million visitors, create more than 26,000 jobs and generate over $1.7 billion in direct spending for local restaurants, hotels and small businesses. No World Cup matches will be played in the city itself, with MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, expected to host eight matches.
