The evidence includes statements from a handwritten manuscript by late mobster James "Whitey" Bulger, who claimed to have been framed for the 1982 killing of businessman John Callahan. The lawyers claim that Bulger identified another FBI agent, John Morris, as his mole and described Connolly as a “sacrificial lamb” to protect him. The material came to light after a longtime prosecutor resigned following reports of misconduct. Connolly was convicted of second-degree murder and racketeering in 1982 and had been serving a 40-year sentence. He was granted compassionate release in 2021 due to his terminal illness and the risks of COVID.
