LETTER: Nevada and the Colorado River negotiations

The Review-Journal has stated that Nevada deserves fair treatment in the Colorado River negotiations, as it uses the least water, leads in conservation and reuses about 85 percent of its own product. However, the newspaper also notes that prior negotiations have precedent for Nevada surrendering portions of its legal entitlement. This comes as California benefits significantly from higher reservoir levels under the compact, which prioritises water use within the system over energy production. The editorial also fails to acknowledge that Colorado diverts significant amounts of its Colorado River water across the Continental Divide, sending much of it out of the system entirely, while Nevada returns most of its use.
