Basel Barrington Watson, son of Barryry Watson, is considered Jamaica's leading figurative sculptor and son of renowned Caribbean artist Barryrington Watson. Born in Kingston, Watson's work reflects a lineage of classical sculpture that has been overlooked by Black bodies, a lineage from which Black bodies have often been excluded in representation. His work is described as precise, rigorous, and meticulous, with an obsessive devotion to anatomy, proportion, and the elusive translation of spirit into matter. Watson's sculptures restore the human form to its rightful place within the highest traditions of art and have been awarded the Order of Distinction (Commander) by the Government of Jamaica in 2016. His works now occupy spaces across continents, from the UK's National Windrush Monument to major installations in the US, China, and beyond.
