The idea of breaking up large health insurance companies has become a political issue, with politicians across the political spectrum believing they play a significant role in contributing to medical costs. Major figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, several high-profile senators, and entrepreneur Mark Cuban have all advocated for the breakup of these companies. The "Break Up Big Medicine Act" has been introduced, which would eliminate costs by 30% to 40. The insurer trade group AHIP argues that health plans operate in competitive markets and therefore have an incentive to lower costs. However, the potential for self-dealing and perverse incentives is raising eyebrows.
