The Florida Legislature has agreed to extend an emergency fund used by Gov. Ron DeSantis for immigration enforcement efforts that expired in February. The House and Senate voted to extend the fund with new rules on how the funds can be spent. The bill includes reporting requirements for the governor’s office and the Division of Emergency Management to report spending quarterly. However, restrictions were watered down on the use of the funds, including the $250 million Senate included in the bill. Since 2022, the legislature has deposited $4.77 billion into the fund, and currently the balance is around $200 million. The original version of the bill severely limited the state's ability to spend money and redefined how the money should be used, effectively banning purchases and contracts related to immigration enforcement.
