Kids Animation Model ‘Broken’ as Streamers Retreat, Upending Pathways to Market

The business model underpinning kids and family animation is under strain, according to a panel at Spain's Quirino Future Lab. The panel included veteran producers Sherry Gunther Shugerman and Bobbie Page, head of production at Australian indie juggernaut Glitch Productions and a Warner Bros. Animation veteran. They argued that traditional pathways to market are narrowing as new, creator-led models begin to scale. This shift follows a rapid decline in streaming's focus on kids content. Children's programming has not been a consistent driver of subscriptions, leading platforms to narrow their strategies and reduce risk. Meanwhile, linear television continues to erode as an outlet for children's programming.
