Lincoln Children’s Zoo has revealed the name of its rare female Matschie's tree kangaroo, named Samala, one of only three born in facilities accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums last year. The zoo's community voted on the potential names in February. Samala is named in honor of a village birth attendant (VBA) in the YUS Conservation Area of Papua New Guinea, where VBAs assist local midwives who support women through pregnancy and childbirth in remote communities where no doctors or trained nurses are available.
