A two-week-old bald eaglet in Pittsburgh has undergone emergency surgery after accidentally ingesting a fishing hook its parent accidentally fed to the baby bird. The incident occurred during a livestream of the nest and Don German, who oversees the eagle nest for U.S. Steel, contacted Tamarack Wildlife Center in Pennsylvania and was advised to remove the eaglets from the nest for medical evaluation and treatment. However, the rescue required approval from federal and state agencies, as well as the landowner. The young eagle underwent emergency surgery from avian veterinary specialist Dr. Jesse Fallon, less than 12 hours after it ate the hook. If all goes well, the young eagle could be returned to its nest in a week or so.
