Kern County, California, is cracking down on unpermitted food vendors without permits in an effort to ensure they stop selling products on the streets. The Kern County Public Health (KCPH) has conducted sting operations to enforce these violations, resulting in 13 vendors receiving cease and desist orders and removing "hazardous" food from them. The health department has stated that unperformed food vendors pose a health risk and that it will be difficult to enforce due to confusion about how to obtain a permit. Angelica Valdovinos, owner of Tamales Ebenezer in Bakersfield, experienced this firsthand, and now has a permit for her tamale truck. Despite the crackdown, some locals have expressed appreciation for the vendors, preferring them to have them there selling food over a homeless encampment.
