Denver airport gears up for spring break as TSA employees miss first paycheck
Published on March 12, 2026.
The partial federal government shutdown has resulted in the absence of funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and resulted in thousands of federal airport security screeners missing their first paychecks as spring break begins. Denver International Airport officials are urging the public and airport employees to donate grocery store and fuel gift cards in denominations of $10 or $20 to support TSA employees who continue to work without pay. The TSA estimates that from March 11 through March 29, over 1.3 million passengers will travel through DIA’s security checkpoints. The busiest travel days in Denver are expected to be on Friday, Sunday, March 20 and March 22. Travelers have reported multiple screening delays of over three hours as TSA staffing levels struggle to meet traveler demand.
