Colleges struggle to keep up with growing mental health problems

Despite increased efforts by universities to combat depression and suicidal ideation among college students, depression and trouble concentrating remain high among students. A Johns Hopkins University analysis revealed large increases in mental health symptoms from 2007 to 2022, including suicide ideation, restlessness, and difficulty concentrating. Women, minority students, and people with financial difficulty were more likely to experience depressive symptoms. Despite increased services, experts suggest that colleges have taken a reactionary approach to addressing these issues. A survey from Inside Higher Ed in 2024 found that the primary factor driving the campus mental health crisis was balancing school with personal and family duties. The problem lies in identifying what is causing longer-term trends.
