A new play on Hawaii Island, "Chegamos: We Arrived," explores the story of Portuguese immigrants in the late 1870s. The play was developed through the words of playwright Jackie Pualani Johnson and Portuguese Family History Collections of Kāhealani Martins Curammeng. The production, which primarily focuses on one ship that left Madeira with over 1,400 immigrants, captures the struggles and hardships of the Portuguese and their triumphs at their new home in Hawaii. The performances will be performed at Lyman Museum in Hilo, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Kahuku Unit, and the Ko Education Center in Honokaa.
