New York is set to host a significant selection Sunday, with St. John’s, Hofstra and Long Island University also set to learn their seed and first-round draw on “Selection Sunday” or “selection Sunday.” Hofstra, which last appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2001, and LIU, who have been coached by Speedy Claxton since 2021, last won the Coastal Athletic Association tournament championship. Hofstra earned an automatic NCAA Tournament bid by winning the CAA tournament final, marking the fifth-ever March Madness berth for the Pride. Meanwhile, LIU claimed its automatic bid after winning the Northeast Conference Tournament with a 79-70 victory over Mercyhurst. This is LIU's fourth season under Rod Strickland, who has been coaching the team since 1988-90.
