Adventurers in Utah and beyond are being referred to as "Alpine divorces," following a recent manslaughter conviction of a mountaineer whose girlfriend died when he abandoned her during a difficult climb. The term was coined after a video of a woman sobbing after a man ditched her in the Nevada desert went viral. In the state where outdoor rec attracts a large number of young singles, mismatched adventuring skills is a significant relationship hurdle. Other hikers have reported being left while sick or injured, unable to speak the local language, and without adequate water or gear.
