The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCD) is planning to widen I-77 South in Charlotte with toll lanes to stimulate economic growth. However, new visuals have emerged suggesting other public benefits such as parks, mixed-use development, and walking bridges. Shannon Binns, CEO of Sustain Charlotte, said NCDOT has not adequately incorporated community feedback. Most of these ideas centered on freeway caps, but it is unlikely the N.DOT will abandon its toll lanes and instead pursue a cap on the existing freeway. The agency has rejected the idea of underground toll lanes due to the cost.
