Grad student at UAF, Cade Quigley, is working on a project at the Alaska Earthquake Center (Alaskan Earthquake Center) aimed at developing a new method for better locating offshore earthquakes. The Coastal Array Project, funded through a USGS award, uses seismic arrays that were installed in Kodiak and Homer in September and removed in November. The project aims to use these arrays to better pinpoint an offshore earthquake’s epicenter than traditional systems with seismometers. This method could potentially be integrated into a possible future earthquake early warning system in Alaska. The method is also thought to better track an earthquake's path as it happens. However, public mistrust in the system could potentially create problems if the earthquake is not accurately pinpointed, leading to mislocated or not sending out an alert far away from the epicenter.
