Erin Merryn, a former child sex abuse victim, has pushed for states to require mandatory child sexual abuse prevention education in public schools. Her law, Erin's Law, aims to address the issue of child sexual assault in schools, particularly among boys and men. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in 20 boys and one in four girls are likely underestimated due to underreporting due to underestimated numbers. The first state to pass the law, Illinois, has since implemented one hour of instruction during the school year, and as of 2025, 38 states have laws or similar systems requiring such education. However, there are currently only 10 states that only encourage such education in schools.
