The development of behind-the-meter (BTM) power generation in Texas is booming, with data center developers seeking to deploy facilities faster than grid connections can be completed. Over 20 GW of BTM power projects for data centers in Texas in 2024-2025, compared to 56 GW nationwide, announced by data provider Cleanview. A further 10 GW was announced in Texas for January-April 2026. Most of these projects will use gas-fired power, with some combining renewables with battery storage in hybrid configurations to ensure reliability. Demand for BTM projects has increased over the last year, with developers seeking faster timelines than grid expansion projects. Some proposed BTM developments include large, fully off-grid power setups. However, fully-off-grid systems are unlikely to become the main model as ensuring reliability requires significant redundancy.
