A bipartisan group of senators is pushing for a bill to cap the cost of insulin at $35 per month for Americans with private insurance plans. The bill, introduced by Sens. Jeanne Shaheen, D-Maine, Raphael Warnock, Susan Collins, and John Kennedy, R-La., would also start a pilot program to provide more affordable insulin to uninsured Americans in 10 states. The legislation faces many hurdles, including concerns about the cost and competing congressional priorities. Major insulin makers Eli Lilly, Sanofi and Novo Nordisk have all been working to reduce the cost. However, not all patients are covered, as 57% of Americans with health insurance have self-insured plans that states can't regulate.
