Mining boosters in the Iron Range, northern Minnesota, see a golden opportunity for the region's mining industry if it doesn't slip away. The Mesabi Metallics iron ore mine in northern Minnesota is set to open this summer, a $2.4 billion investment that will bring nearly 350 full-time jobs to the western end of the region. The Iron Range produces 80% of the nation's iron ore, the raw material for steel used in ships, skyscrapers and automobiles. However, momentum for new mines has stalled in Congress due to environmental opposition and a lack of progress in the industry. Mining companies like Cleveland-Cliffs are also dealing with slowdowns in domestic auto manufacturing. Critics argue that mining in the region is not enough to protect the pristine nature of the pristine Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the Rainy River watershed. Despite efforts by both parties, local environmentalists and tribal groups have long held strong opposition to the proposed mine.
