The town of Porter has purchased a property at the corner of U.S. 20 for $176,500. The purchase can be financed through a grant from the Northeast Indiana Regional Development Authority for adding onto the Dunes Kankakee Trail. The land has been owned by Nice & Easy Gas & Mini Mart since 2001 and is expected to become a key crossing location for bicyclists and pedestrians. The hope is that the town will eventually extend the Waverly Road trail to Porter Beach. The Redevelopment Commission also approved $45,000 to be used by Porter’s Volunteer Fire Department to hire part-time firefighters.
