Spirit Airlines sudden layoffs hurt cancer patients and careers

Spirit Airlines' sudden layoffs have negatively impacted the lives of passengers and employees, including flight attendants Dante Taylor and Joe Lopez, who were laid off after their health insurance expired, and lost their seniority and benefits. Taylor and Lopez expressed their frustration that the airline had not given them more time to prepare for their impending health insurance expiration. CareerSource South Florida is hosting a job fair for former Spirit Airlines employees, offering services such as job coaching and placement centers. The airline has reported laying off over 4,850 employees in Florida, including over 3,260 in Broward and Miami-Dade counties. The company has reported more than $2.5 billion in losses since 2020 and filed layoff notices with the FloridaCommerce, the state’s lead agency for workforce, and laid off more than 3,600 employees in Browards.
