A new COVID-19 variant, BA.3.2, has been detected in 25 states and could overcome protection from vaccines or previous infections, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Cicada). This variant has been reported in 23 countries and has been seen in Africa, Asia, Europe, North American and Oceania since November 2024. The vaccine appears to alleviate some symptoms but is not a close match to the new virus form. It is believed that Cicada has about 75 mutations in its spike protein, which binds to human cells. The public health impact of the new variant is still significant, with an estimated 390,000–550,000 hospitalizations and 45,000-64,000 deaths during the 2024–25 respiratory virus season.
