Ireland strengthens equitable access to assistive technology, new WHO assessment shows
Published on May 6, 2026.
Ireland has advanced equitable access to assistive technology with a new Assistive Technology Capacity Assessment (ATA-C), conducted by the Government of Ireland and WHO/Europe. The ATA-C provides the most comprehensive assessment of Ireland's ability to deliver assisted technology, including wheelchairs, hearing aids, walking canes, eyeglasses and digital solutions. The assessment also identified gaps in coordination, uneven access across regions and population groups, and the need for clearer governance and better financing mechanisms. It proposes a comprehensive set of recommended actions to develop a more unified, equitable and responsive assistive tech system. This assessment supports Ireland’s overarching vision for universal health coverage and supports WHO’s call for greater efforts towards universal health.
