The MV Hondius, a cruise ship run by Netherlands-based expedition cruise operator Oceanwide Expeditions, has been identified as an eighth hantavirus-linked case among passengers on the cruise ship. Three people have died from the outbreak on the ship since it began on April 6. The cruise ship, which departed from Argentina on April 1 and made multiple stops in remote and ecologically diverse regions, is currently moored off the coast of Cape Verde, an island nation off Africa's west coast. The strain of hantivirus identified as the Andes virus, a strain found in South America that spreads person-to-person. Officials believe a husband and wife, Dutch nationals, may have been infected while they were off-board during wildlife expeditions. The ship's evacuation and treatment will take place in the Canary Islands, where passengers and crew will be screened and treated in line with protocol from health officials.
