A study by researchers at Stanford and Yale has found that artificial intelligence (AI) technology may be more accurate than its intended use. The study tested top-tier legal AI tools, including Lexis+ AI and Westlaw, which were marketed as "hallucination-free," but they found they misjudged 17% to 33% of the time. These failures included Citing a case but claiming the judge said "Yes" when they actually said "No". The study also highlighted a problem where AI mistakenly identifies every document as "relevant," leading to an inability to differentiate between a serious history book and a comic book. The researchers concluded that while AI is a great tool for a "first draft," it is not yet ready to be the final word in a courtroom.
