Rami Elghandour, an alumnus and biotech executive from Rutgers University, was scheduled to deliver a speech at the School of Engineering convocation but was disinvited by the university after some students raised concerns about his social media posts related to Israel and the war in Gaza. Despite this, he delivered his speech on YouTube, expressing his disappointment over the decision to cancel his speech. The university chose to keep the focus on engineering students over other students, citing the need for students to be able to choose between their personal convictions and a convocation ceremony. Elgandour has been outspoken in his criticism of Israel and its war in the past and regularly posts pro‑Palestinian commentary on social media, accusing Israel of committing genocide and war crimes. The Rutgers University Senate voted to censure the dean of the school of Engineering for rescinding Elghanour’s invitation. The New Jersey chapter of the American Council on the Islamic Council of Islamic Relations welcomed the decision, while the Rutgers Senate called for a review of the decision.
