The 2026 primary election in North Carolina saw local, regional and statewide races held across the state. The race for the next sheriff in Mecklenburg County was decided in the primary election due to several controversies, including inmate deaths, immigration crackdown, lawsuits, proposals to reopen the juvenile justice center, and implementation of Iryna's Law. The U.S. Senate seat for North Carolina is also an important race for North Carolinians. Former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper and Republican Michael Whatley are projected winners of their respective primaries and will face off in the November election. The election results will be delayed by at least one hour due to a minor issue at one precinct.
