Rocky Carroll, a Cincinnati native, played the role of NCIS Director Leon Vance for 18 years. The character was killed as part of the series' 500th episode. Carroll expressed surprise at the decision, but quickly came to terms with it. Despite technically being dead, Carroll suggested that viewers may not have seen the last of the character. He credits his knowledge of the storyline and belief in the belief that excellence can transcend society's issues.
