The primary election results in Illinois have indicated that the state is ready to select its next congressional leadership in the Senate, House of Representatives, and Governor. The primary election saw a number of candidates vying to replace longtime incumbent Senator Dick Durbin, who is retiring in 2025. For the Democratic ticket, Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton won by 40%, beating Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, who led in campaign finance. Stratton, backed by Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, could become the 6th Black woman in history to serve to the upper chamber if she wins in November. The Republican race for the Senate will be won by Don Tracy, former chair of the Illinois Republican Party in the heavily-Democrat state. Two incumbent Illinois House members, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, 81, and Rep. Danny Davis, 84, have announced their retirement, and two more seats are open after their retirement. The results of the primary have significant implications for the November midterms.
