Sharks have options, ‘an embarrassment of riches’ after NHL draft lottery

The San Jose Sharks missed the playoffs this season and ended up with the 17th overall selection in the NHL draft lottery. However, due to luck, the Sharks now own a potentially game-changing second overall pick in 2026. General manager Mike Grier has several options, including trading the No. 2 pick to address a roster issue, potentially adding high-end players like Caleb Malhotra, a defenseman like Chase Reid or Keaton Verhoeff, or winger Ivar Stenberg to their prospect pool. The Sharks have taken 11 players in either the first or second drafts over the past three years.
