The Microreactor Application Research Validation and Evaluation (MARVEL) project at Idaho National Laboratory is developing a small, sodium-potassium-cooled nuclear reactor. The project aims to help private companies build their own reactors without reinventing the wheel. Two milestones have included the Department of Energy approving their Preliminary Documented Safety Analysis report and the team completing a reactivity control system, which uses control drums instead of vertical control rods. MARVEL is now being built and assembled and could be used by private companies for potential microreactor applications. President Donald Trump's pro-nuclear power executive order has significantly accelerated progress at INL, with MARVEL now targeting sometime between September and December of 2026.
