What Utah’s governor saw behind the scenes at Italy’s Olympics

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox has revealed that it will take a significant amount of work for Utah to host the 2034 Winter Games. He spent a week observing behind-the-scenes operations at the Milan Cortina Winter Games in Italy, observing power outages and logistical issues such as long lines for Olympic volunteers and a lack of technology merging together. Despite these challenges, Cox noted positives, including the quality of temporary practice rinks set up for the Italian Games and the ability of Italian organizers to quickly share data among themselves and outside experts. The $4 billion Winter Games are being run by a privately funded organizing committee, and Cox signed a contract with the International Olympic Committee that Utah taxpayers will cover any shortfall.
