SkyWater Technology CEO Tom Sonderman has stated that the case for domestic manufacturing of semiconductors is strong, with the company set to continue to grow. This comes as SkyWater is in talks with IonQ about a $1.8 billion acquisition. The company is one of about 150 semiconductor operations in Minnesota, making up one of the fastest-growing sectors in the state. The sector grew 11.4% from 2021 to 2025, with its 10,100 workers earning about $97,000 a year more than 25% higher than the average annual wage in Minnesota. The federal government has helped fund hundreds of millions of dollars in improvements at SkyWater. The chips SkyWater's building will be used as the framework for quantum computers, a new generation of computing that promises to deliver more computing power and efficiency. The U.S. share of global chip manufacturing capacity is decreasing by 37% to 2022, a decrease from 1990 to 2022.
