A spring storm in California's eastern Sierra Nevada has resulted in over 3.5 feet of snowfall, which has extended the ski season at Mammoth Mountain. The storm followed a period of drought that led to the closure of Interstate 80 in Northern California and significant disruption to ski resorts. The UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab reported 42.5 inches of snow between Friday and Sunday, creating a late-season snowpack. However, the lab warned that warm temperatures this winter meant that the Sierra snowpack, which provides one-third of California's water, was still below average for the water year.
