Hundreds of Afghan refugees who helped the US fight the Taliban may be sent to the Democratic Republic of Congo instead, according to advocacy group AfghanEvac. The group accuses the Trump administration of offering them an alternative so bad that they would return to Afghanistan, where they could face persecution, imprisonment or death under the Islamic fundamentalist regime. The refugee camp near Doha, where about 1,100 Afghans were evacuated to await U.S. resettlement, is slated for closure and many have been waiting for months or years to be reunited with family in the US. The State Department has no plans to force anyone back to Afghanistan and has stated that moving refugees from Camp As Sayliyah to third countries is a "positive resolution". The DRC is currently dealing with one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, with over 600,000 refugees already there.
