American alumroot (Heuchera americana) is a shade-loving Ohio native that repels deer and rabbits and can tolerate black walnut trees. The plant's bitter-tasting leaves repel animals and its small, greenish-cream flowers attract pollinators like bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. It is also tolerant of the toxic substance juglone, which causes the growth of other plants growing beneath black walnuts. Alumroot is a small mounding perennial related to the popular coral bells cultivars found in most garden stores. It grows 1-3 feet tall and is a good ground cover or edging plant. The roots of this plant contain the mineral alum, a powerful astringent once used to treat wounds, sores, nosebleeds, and gastrointestinal issues.
