New book by Tony Lee Moral, "A Century of Hitchcock," reveals that Alfred Hitchcock was a complicated figure whose personal behavior sometimes cast a shadow over his work. The book focuses on the making of "The Birds," a thriller based on a Daphne du Maurier short story, and on the subject of a previously undisclosed incident involving the film's male lead, Rod Taylor. The incident occurred during a night out at Chateau Ingeborg where Taylor was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Despite this, the hairdresser on the film, Virginia Darcy, persuaded him to release Taylor with a caution and a citation, indicating that if Taylor had been charged, it could have halted production. The author's research also includes interviews with cast and crew members, and previously unpublished material.
