GOP senator pitches plan to slash California’s sky-high gas taxes — and save drivers more than $1 per gallon

California State Sen. Tony Strickland has proposed a plan to suspend California's high gas taxes and potentially save drivers more than $1 per gallon by suspending four different taxes and fees for a year, including charges related to California's green energy initiatives. The proposal comes amidst calls from even left-wing candidates for governor for suspension of California’s fuel tax or easing regulations as gas prices reach $5.54 per gallon. The legislation would maintain funding for road and infrastructure repairs and would take effect immediately if it were to pass both chambers of the Legislature and be signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom. However, officials in the governor’�s office believe there is no evidence that repealing gas taxes will significantly reduce costs.
