California Republican Rep. Kevin Kiley has chosen to run in a heavily Democratic seat in the newly drawn 6th congressional district, rather than facing a fellow Republican. Kiley, who was considering a run against his fellow Republican colleague in the neighboring 5th district, stated that "what's easy and what's right are often not the same." His decision to run against Democrats in the Democratic-friendly 6th district will force him to appeal to more independents and moderates as he aims to further cement himself as a foil to Gavin Newsom. The decision comes as California's election system allows the top two vote-getters in a primary to move onto the general election.
