Reform N.Y.’s auto insurance: Hochul has the right ideas to lower costs

The New York State budget is late due to Gov. Mary Hochul's insistence on several policy reforms, including increasing auto insurance costs. These include a $100,000 cap on pain and suffering awards for anyone driving while uninsured, impaired or drunk or driving while committing a felony. The proposal is buried deep in the budget bills and includes expanding the circle of those prosecuted under state law for fake accidents. The elimination of a loose catch-all category in the definition of “serious injury” should also be removed. Despite some opposition, New York’s no-fault rules are unchanged.
